How Bad Are Dust Mites, Really?
Dust mites feed on human skin flakes and love hiding in mattresses, sofas, carpets and curtains. Research shows a two-year-old mattress can contain over a million mites. Their remains and droppings are among the most common allergens, triggering rhinitis, asthma and eczema.
Hong Kong’s warm, humid climate is the ideal breeding environment for dust mites, which makes cleaning and maintaining fabric furniture especially important.
Everyday Care Tips
Vacuum sofa and mattress surfaces weekly (ideally with a HEPA filter); wash bed sheets and pillowcases weekly in water above 60°C; and keep your home dry — humidity below 50% suppresses dust mite breeding.
If you spill a drink on the sofa, blot the moisture immediately with a dry cloth — don’t rub hard, or the stain will soak into the fibres.
How Often Should You Book Professional Deep Cleaning?
A professional deep clean every 6 to 12 months is recommended. Professionals use high-temperature steam or specialised extraction machines that reach deep into the fibres, reducing dust mites and drawing out embedded dirt and moisture — results a household vacuum simply cannot match.
If you have children, allergy sufferers or pets at home, shorten the interval to every six months.
